Pumpkin Autumn Arrangement

autumn arrangement in a gourd

Let’s celebrate this beautiful season by creating stunning autumn arrangements using natural material that can be found in the garden and around the city.

Here are a few ideas of what you can do with these easy to make arrangements:

1.       Create a centre piece for a table at your next family event or social gathering

2.       Place outside to decorate the front entrance

3.       Add to flower pots or urns

4.       Use it as a nature nook in the home as a way to connect with nature when you're unable to get outside

Natural materials that you may already have in your garden or around your area:

·          Wildflowers - goldenrod, asters,

·          Flowering annuals and perennials - chrysanthemums, geraniums, marigolds,    straw flowers and Chinese lanterns

·          Branches with leaves - oak and beech

·          Decorative branches - dogwood, willow and grapevine

·          Seed pods - black eyed susans, irises and purple cone

·          Leafy veggies and herbs  - kale, cabbage, mint, sage and thyme

natural material found in autumn

It may be more challenging to find some of these natural materials as we progress through the season and get closer to winter. Floral shops and craft stores are other sources.

Most grocery stores and garden centres will have a variety of small gourds or winter squash to choose from. Carve out the center of the gourd and add wet oasis foam. You can find wet oasis foam at craft stores. The oasis will hold the plant material in place and keep them fresh. Arrange the material as you wish.

Here are a few steps to consider when creating your design

1.       Line – tall pieces of natural material, such as branches, added to the centre.

2.       Filler – shorter pieces of natural material that are added around the branches to create a full display of colour and texture.

3.       Focal – a single object that is eye catching such as a bow, large flower or ornament. Nestle the focal point in amongst filler.

This experience will get you outside for at least 15-20 minutes and will provide you with the benefits of connecting with nature such as a positive shift in mood and a sense of enjoyment. The arrangement you create will bring the beauty you discover outside into your living space and provide you with the opportunity to be creative and express yourself.
